Together they create the internal reflections that maximise a stone's sparkle, brilliance and fire. If you can write a one-sentence definition and one observable indicator for each of the three, you can answer reasoning questions about why a well-proportioned stone with poor polish still loses brilliance.
Hearts & Arrows diamonds are precisely cut round brilliants that, viewed through a special viewer, display eight hearts through the pavilion (seen from below) and eight arrows through the crown (seen from above); the presence of the pattern is a strong indicator of a top-quality cut. Fix the orientation with a simple memory check: hearts below, arrows above — the viewer reveals hearts when you look at the pavilion side.
